After
Analy, I attended Santa Rosa Junior College for two years,
graduating in 1967. San Francisco State was next, where I
received a bachelors degree in journalism in 1969.
I met my husband, John, at SF State. We had several journalism
classes together, and he was one of the editors of the student
newspaper. After we graduated, we moved to Concord, where
he was the editor of the Concord Transcript, and I was a general
assignment reporter for the Pittsburgh Post-Dispatch. I won
a couple of prizes for my writing and was offered a job with
the Contra Costa Times in Walnut Creek. By this time, John
was working at the Oakland Tribune (city editor), and so we
moved to the Oakland Hills. I stayed at the Times for about
7 years, "graduating" from city hall reporter to
society editor. Then I was hired for the San Francisco bureau
of U.S. News & World Report, where I spent another 7 enjoyable
years covering news in 12 Western states.
In 1985, John was offered a very good job with the Rocky
Mountain News in Denver, so we moved to Colorado, and I entertained
the idea of retiring. After a month of soap operas and housework,
I decided that wasn't the life for me, so I started looking
for work. By lucky coincidence, the society editor at the
Denver Post was retiring, and so I applied for--and got--that
job.
We've really come to love living and working in Denver. Our
lives have been blessed by good health, personal happiness,
and the ability to stay employed in a field that is notorious
for burnout and short tenures. We don't have any children,
just three dogs: Diego the chihuahua, Ling the Pekingese and
Millie the "terrible terrier."
In February, we finished an extensive remodel of our house
(for five months, the five of us shared cramped quarters at
a local Residence Inn), so it looks like this is where we'll
stay.
We've really enjoyed getting to know this part of the world;
our favorite places to visit are northern New Mexico, the
Grand Tetons in Wyoming and, of course, the Colorado high
country. We did a lot of overseas traveling when we still
lived in California, and had a great time seeing the rest
of the world, but now we're content to stay closer to home.
I'm so happy that this virtual reunion site has been started;
it is a great way to stay in touch. Love seeing all the pictures!
Thanks for all the time and effort that it takes to keep something
like this going. |
